The Winter Season and Health

Most likely you, like others, find the winter season the most difficult to handle in regards to your staying healthy.  A lot of stresses are placed upon our bodies at this time.  Not only do we have to deal with the cold weather but we usually have emotional stresses related to family gatherings and long distance travel.

It is when we are under stress that our immune systems are compromised.  It is then we are not able to defend ourselves against invading viruses and bacteria.

Following are a few suggestions that can help you navigate the winter season more successfully and hopefully keep you from contracting any illnesses.

First is the concept of water.  Most people do not think of hydration in the winter.  They only associate it with summer and heat.  However, keeping hydrated in the winter is very important.  In the Five Element theory presented by traditional Chinese medicine we are in the Water element at this time.  This governs the kidneys and the bladder.  It is at this time of the year we become dehydrated and do not realize it.  The cold dry air sneaks up on us and we do not realize it.

It is important to drink more water all the time but especially in the winter.  The dryness impedes our immune system.  In your house you should have some type of humidifier either on the furnace or in the room you sleep.  Dry sinuses do not as affectively filter the air that you breathe in.

More to come…

Free Acugraph Analysis

This is a digital meridian imaging system used to measure and analyze the acupuncture meridians.  By placing Acugraph’s computerized pointer on source points of each meridian, we are able to provide complete graphical analysis and interpretation of the patient’s meridian energetics in nine different graph styles.  Styles include yin/yang, 5-elements, horary, associations with existing symptoms, and recommendations for Chinese herbs.

The Acugraph also provides a Personal Integrated Energetics (P.I.E.) score, which condenses the results down to a single number patients can easily understand.

The Acugraph makes it very simple to provide a whole body reading specific to each patient.  The benefit is that, with the information provided, one can treat the whole body and not just the problem that they came in for.  And most of all, the patient is provided with a evidence based documentation of their progress.

Why not start 2012 with the goal to make your health a priority.  Call us at 573-875-6550 for more information about the Acugraph and to schedule a free analysis.

The Energy of Fall

When I was younger I met the season of fall with a certain amount of excitement and sadness at the same time.  I loved the colors of fall, the cool air and playing football.  However, along with the loves of the season I also felt loss and sadness.  I found it difficult to understand my mixed feelings.

As I became a holistic practitioner, I learned more about our rhythms with the seasons.  I was able to make some sense out of what I was going through.

The fall season has arrived and soon she will show her colors.  Besides the brilliant leaves we are starting to feel the nip in the air, the shortened daylight hours, and the sense of gathering whether it be the fruits or vegetables for winter storage or firewood for the fireplace.

In the 5 element theory of oriental medicine the season of autumn is associated with the element of Metal.  This element governs organization, order, communication, the mind, limits and boundaries.  So it makes sense that this is the time to finish the projects we started earlier in the year.  We harvest the bounty of our work.  It is also the time we start to begin more introspective, indoor projects.

The Fire element ruled the summer.  At this time we dealt more with the external, be it traveling or being outdoors.  Fall, on the other hand, is about organizing especially your life for the winter season ahead.  At this time we come more inside our bodies and minds to reflect.

The lungs and the large intestine are the organs associated with the metal element.  Some of the emotions of the lungs are sadness, letting go and yearning.  This process is what was going on with me when I was younger.  It is often difficult for me and others who love the summer season to give up the long days and the warmth.  Yet being a Libra I also loved the fall and the vivid colors of the leaves.

Through nutrition, acupuncture and learning to be in the moment, I now embrace all of the seasons with anticipation for what they will bring to me.

Here are some ideas that might benefit you during this fall season.  Sleep is important during this time of year.  It has been said that ancients advised people to retire early at night and rise with the crowing of the rooster.  We should be well rested so our lungs remain vibrant and strong.  The lung is the uppermost organ in the body and is especially susceptible to the wind and cold.  And this season is the beginning of wind and cold.  The lungs control the Wei-Qi, which is the defensive Qi that protects you from the flu and colds.  The Wei-Qi circulates on the surface between the skin and muscles and works to warm the body.  If the Wei-Qi is weak, the skin and muscles will not be warmed properly.  This is why people tend to feel cold when they are sick.

It is important to dress appropriately for the weather.  If still dressed for summer it is an open invitation to coughs, sore throats and colds.  Remember when your mom said cover up your head and neck with a scarf and hat.  It was to keep the wind out.  Use of a netti pot or Nasopure nasal system can keep your nose and sinuses clean and clear.  The nose is the opening to the lungs and keeping them clear helps rid the nose of excess mucus.

What you eat is also important.  Eating cold and raw foods can cause dampness and promote phlegm.  This in turn ends up in the lungs.  Dairy products such as milk, cheese and butter can also create phlegm.  Moderate amounts of pungent foods like garlic, onions, ginger, and horseradish and mustard are beneficial to the lungs.

Any time we go into a new season it is a good time to have a change of season acupuncture treatment.  This is especially important in the fall season as this is the time our immune systems are very susceptible.  It is the beginning of the cold and flu season.

Remember that our Qi is derived from two sources, the vital essence of air (Heaven) and food (Earth).  The lung which extracts that Qi fro the air is vulnerable at this time.  And it is also the best time to nuture and heal it.

Fall is definitely a transition time and hopefully with some of this information you can better understand its energies.

Calcium and your Skin – Thoughts for Summertime Sun Exposure

As most people know vitamin D is produced by exposure to the sun.  This happens by ultraviolet rays from the sun converting skin oil to vitamin D.  Vitamin D picks up calcium from the gut and puts it in your blood.

So with the fear of skin cancer and still wanting to have enough vitamin D what is one to do?

Well people who are in the sun a lot get thick skin if they do not get enough vitamin F, which is primarily in oils.  They get hives and sunstroke.  Sunstroke involves high blood calcium levels with low tissue calcium levels.  And excess vitamin D from exposure to the sun is known to cause cancer.  Vitamin F or polyunsaturated fatty acids takes calcium from the blood and puts it in the tissues.

Articles come out telling you to avoid the sun.  Well it is only dangerous to people who do not have vitamin F in their bodies.

Cataplex F, which is made by Standard Process, is a source of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids which are used to transport calcium from blood to tissues.  It contains linolenic, linoleic, and arachidonic acids.

You can enjoy the sun and get the benefits of vitamin D.  The trick is to make sure you have proper tissue calcium levels.  If you are going to get a lot of sun exposure make sure you are getting enough polyunsaturated fatty acids in your diet.  If you are not sure,  Cataplex  F from Standard Process will help keep your calcium tissue levels at a proper level so you can enjoy the sun and reduce your risk of sun related maladies.

Standard Process Protocol for Immune Protection

During the winter season we are much more susceptible to attacks on our immune system.  Cold and flu season can mean more suffering, time lost from school or work, and if you take vaccines or antibiotics – risk of side effects.

One protocol that I have found to work quite well was presented to me by Dr. Bruce West who is the founder of Health Alert/Immune Systems, Inc.

It includes three products from Standard Process (Immuplex, Congaplex, and Thymex), and a product from Green  Pastures (Bluce Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil).  During colds and flu season take Immuplex (3 capsules daily).  Immuplex is full of whole food nutrition so it can be taken as your multivitamin all year long.  Take Congaplex (2 capsules daily) and take Blue Fermented CLO (3 capsules a day).

At the first sign of a cold, flu or respiratory infection, adjust the amounts to 3 Immuplex 3x daily, Thymex (5 tablets 4x daily), Blue Fermented CLO (3 capsules daily), and Congaplex (2 capsules every waking hour).  You will use this protocol until your infection is completely resolved or for up to 4 days.  After that you can return to the original protocol.

For most people this will stop a cold, flu or infection before it can take hold.  If it does not, stick with it.  You will get stronger and your immune system will get stronger.  You will get fewer and fewer colds and flu.

I personally have used this protocol for over 10 years and have not had the flu during that time.  And if I do get sniffles or a runny nose it lasts only 24 hours.  So if you want to protect yourself naturally and avoid being sick try this proven protocol.  Antibiotics and vaccines bring about many risks.  Hopefully if you are reading this article you realize that treating your body naturally is the safest.

Histamine’s Effects on the Body

Many body systems are affected when histamine levels go unchecked.  These include the immune and respiratory systems, liver, and adrenal glands.

Immune System – When the body comes in contact with an intruder, it begins to manufacture antibodies.  After these antibodies encounter the invader, a large amount of histamine is released.  This causes the surrounding blood vessels to dilate, which allows fluid and cells to migrate to the site of insult.  The body overreacts to these intruders, causing stress on the immune system.

Respiratory System – Histamine causes muscle constriction in the lung’s bronchial tubes, which may affect normal breathing.

Liver – When bombarded with histamine, the liver becomes weakened and its ability to remove toxins is compromised, which slows down the release of invaders from the body.

Adrenal Glands – If the body is under stress, these glands secrete cortisol to regulate histamine levels and assist with the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response – helping to combat the symptoms experienced with pollen, seasonal, and other stresses.
