Most likely you, like others, find the winter season the most difficult to handle in regards to your staying healthy. A lot of stresses are placed upon our bodies at this time. Not only do we have to deal with the cold weather but we usually have emotional stresses related to family gatherings and long distance travel.
It is when we are under stress that our immune systems are compromised. It is then we are not able to defend ourselves against invading viruses and bacteria.
Following are a few suggestions that can help you navigate the winter season more successfully and hopefully keep you from contracting any illnesses.
First is the concept of water. Most people do not think of hydration in the winter. They only associate it with summer and heat. However, keeping hydrated in the winter is very important. In the Five Element theory presented by traditional Chinese medicine we are in the Water element at this time. This governs the kidneys and the bladder. It is at this time of the year we become dehydrated and do not realize it. The cold dry air sneaks up on us and we do not realize it.
It is important to drink more water all the time but especially in the winter. The dryness impedes our immune system. In your house you should have some type of humidifier either on the furnace or in the room you sleep. Dry sinuses do not as affectively filter the air that you breathe in.
